I have a 1986 E350 motorhome with a 460. I was told by a friend that the reason it is hard to turn over when warm is because the advance is sticking in the distributor. It turns over fine when it is cold. How can I check this out. Should I be able to move the rotor by hand? thanx. wnk.
The vacuum advance moves the breaker plate, not the rotor. Yes, the rotor will move a bit, which is the mechanical advance.
One sure way to tell, and it's not for the squeamish. Pull the distributor cap off, and pull the vacuum advance hose off the carb. Suck on it, and you'll be able to see if the plate moves.
If you get air when you suck, the vacuum can is shot.
You can always use a new hose if you want.
It also could be that the timing is too far advanced to begin with.
i had the same problem with my 460, no advance. If you have 100,000 on the original distributor, the advance module itself is most likely shot. It is only $5 more to put in a rebuilt distributor, I went that route and upon removal of the old one, the bottom gear was worn pretty bad. When the new one was dropped in at exactly the same spot as the old one, there was a 4 degree difference in the timing, according to the light.
