Ok I ve a question that should be easy to answer but for some reason i can not get one.....1978-79 Dana 44's they came in F-250's and so did Dana 60's ( we are talking front end here by the way ) but was there a High pinion Dana 44 HD in those years , I know that A "high-boy" (pre 1977.5) has a low pinion ......so does there exist a high pinion leaf spring Dana 44 HD or not .......all i have gotten was a bunch of back yard BS so far from plp who want to be an expert on something besides drinking beer, which i am an expert at ...thanks for any help
I think what you are referring to is the actual Dana HD designation on the low pinion Dana 44 axles under the F-250's pre 77.5. This HD designation was dropped for the 77.5 to 79 F-250 44's but they are still very heavy duty compared to any other Dana 44 offered.
Go to this link for the gospel on the reverse spiral, or reverse cut (not reverse rotation) Dana 44 axle. Part 2 of the article has great pictures and text to explain the HD low pinion vs. the newer high pinions.
If you learn the info on these pages you will definately be more knowledgeable about the Ford Dana 44's than your back yard beer drinking buddies!

read the article
"High pinion, Hy-Pinion or Hi-Pinion are all slang used in and out of the industry for a reverse spiral axle. High Clearance is a Ford marketing term used for the reverse spiral axle. Reverse rotation: is the single most misused axle term. Reverse Rotation is a slang term used to describe a reverse spiral cut housing. Neither the axle nor the axle shafts travel in a reverse motion, or travel 'backwards' compared to a regular housing. This term only shows the ignorance of the person or company using it."
My apologies mjl351w, this shouldn't be another session of back yard b.s.
Call it reverse spiral, high pinion, reverse cut or reverse rotation - they are all the same thing and yes they were standard equipment on '77.5-'79 F250's.
I used to call it revese rotation myself. One day I learned it was an incorrect term. Since I am open to learning and re-educating myself I started using the correct terminology. Some folks refuse to learn, and are always correct whether they are wrong or not.
By the way, he only refers to it as reverse spiral in the article, the term coined by DANA themselves and used by most every axle builder I've dealt with. The only slang being used in the article is the identification of the slang terms. Once again, READ the article instead of posturing.
Thanks guys for all the help and for putting this to rest once and for all ...... now all i have to do is go and get one ...belive it or not i am gonna trade a "high-pinion" Dana 44 HD ( now that i know they do exist ) for a good working Dana 60 front ......yes i know it don't sound right , but he says he wants the extra ground clearance and i am not gonna' argue
