1986 Ranger starting problem

I have a 1986 Ford Ranger 2.9 V-6, 5 speed manual, 4x4 extended cab pickup. Starts fine first thing in the mornings or if restarted within 20 minutes of turning off. If left more than 30 minutes or less than 3 hours it will turn over many times before starting and when it does start it coughs and misses (like flooded) for several seconds before resuming normal idle.
Please help, I have tried everything I can think of. Dick

Welcome to FTE!!!

Do you get any smoke (black) when it does start up? It could be flooding, a common source it a leaking fuel pressure regulator. It is mounted on the fuel rail and has a vacuum line to the intake. Run the truck for a few minutes, shut it down and check for gas in the vacuum line or were it connects to the FPR.

Regulator does not appear to be leaking and have not noticed black smoke upon starting. Will recheck though. Thanks for the speedy reply. Dick

I have almost exactly the same problem on an 86 2.9 2wd. I have not pinpointed the timing scenarios as you have, but I do sometimes get a bit of grumbling, missing and smoke after a "too many cranks before start". Let me tell you what comes to mind and if I figure it out I will let you know - please do the same.
One cause could be a leaky injector(s)- if the injector leaks when the engine is off you have the combonation of low pressure in the rail when trying to start (explaining the many cranks while starting to allow for the fuel pump to build up pressure) as well as flooding in one or more of the cylinders where the injector leaked (causing the smoke etc. This does not explain the morning starts but perhaps after cooling the injector stops leaking and the fuel evavorates.

I plan on hooking up a fuel pressure gauge, and checking if the pressure drops when it shouldn't.

If you don't have black smoke or a leaking FPR I would check for spark. The TFI module is known for causing "hot" problems. I would also check the plugs when you have a no-start just to make sure its not flooding, they would be wet with fuel.

Thanks for the replys. I have not checked the injectors nor ever thought of that. Please let me know how the pressure test goes. Have replace almost everything except injectors including ignition module. Will try to check plugs too.
