I have been told I need ball joints at 30,000 miles on my f-350 4x4 diesel, they told me they are loose
does this sound right?
I do tow with the truck but it doesn't seem to be having problems
they quoted $1200 for the job
any advice
Yes it is possibe. I had ball joints replaced at 30k also. My friend replaces them every year on his superduty. It all depends on your driving. There are a lot of potholes in NEPA and I think that is one of my causes. $1200 does seem awfully steep though. I mechanic friend of mine change all four ball joints for $400 parts and labor. Make sure you get ones with a lifetime warranty like MOOGS.
Had mine done at 50,000. 1/4 in play on lft lower and about the same on right upper. Replaced all 4 though. Paid $50.00 deductible for my extended warranty.
i went to get a wheel alighnment last week and the guy told me that everything was fine but one of my ball joints had the slightest bit of movement, so there was a shim i could buy that tightens the joint up, it seemed to have worked. he also siad that ford allows up to 60 thousands of an inch of play before you have to replace the ball joint, whats the truth behind this, anybody know?

I make my living as a Helicopter Mechanic so checking bearing tolerances is an everyday task. As I stated in my last reply, I had 1/4 in (.250) movement before I had mine replaced. That measurement was apx and movement at the top or bottom of the installed tire. .060 sounds like quite a bit if its at the joint. My joints were definately shot. As for the shim, I would be concerned that its instalation would mask further wear of your joints. Hope this helps a little.
The best thing to do is buy the parts from Advance Auto Parts. they offer TRW chassis parts (this is the brand that every heavy-duty truck uses for its steering and chassis) and they come with a lifetime warranty. The prices are only a few dollars more than everyone elses cheap brand because they sell so many of them. I do not know of any other auot parts store that offers TRW though so if you do not have an advance then I would go with MOOG or NAPA Chassis
