I have an F-350 4x4 diesel and was told by a local shop it needs ball joints at 30,000 miles!
does that sound right at this mileage
I am having no apparent problems
It will cost $1200 for the job
has anyone had this experience?
$1200 Sounds about right for replacing all of the ball joints. I have had prices between $600 and $700 for one side. I did however replace one side on my own. I did not run into as many problems as I thought I would. It took me about a day and a half. If you have even a little talent with tools, you could do this job. Let me know if you have questions about it.
Replaced both sides at 40,000 with napa upper and lower. The aftermarket comes with greese zircs so the should last forever, both sides cost $120. They are easy to get off the local napa store pressed the old out and new in. With a little mech knowledge and good instruction book save some bucks.
I think $1200 seems high. I replaced mine at just over 50K. I had family do it. I got an estimate from the Ford heavy truck / rig of around $740. $250 parts and the rest labor. I guess check around. I used the NAPA with the grease fittings too.
Best way to tell if you need new ones is to jack up one side and grab the tire at top and bottem. If you can move the tire in and out they probably need replaced. You can also use a pry bar under the jacked up tire and lift up. If you have a lot of play change. I suggest aftermarket for the greese zircs, just my 2 cents.
whats better is when i had both uppers that needed to be replaced at 84k.... and the aftermarket warrenty was going to cover it.......
the catch is, they wouldnt go on and cover the lowers at the same time. even though they werent bad, i went ahead and paid 300 buck to do it.... might as well... they will be bad, and then i'll have to pay for all the labor again..
