Battery Location

Is there a way or a kit that will allow me to move the battery under the hood. I was thinking of adding another gas tank in the passenger side and I may want to move the battery out of the way. Ed

Yeah I know it is possible I just want to know if it has been done and made to look good by someone here. Has anyone added another gas tank to the other side of the cab instead of the bed of the truck.

Yes. I have a second tank on the passemger side. I moved the battery under the hood. Had to move the stub pipe on the tank to opposite corner and cut hole in corner of cab. Put in fuel line switch under seat and switch to change gas guage. It all works pretty good.

You are my hero. Someone that thinks outside the box. That is what I think I should do as well. Ok how did you do the battery change out. I think I will have no problem with the gas tank because as you said the installation is straight forward. Ed

To move the battery under the hood i made a box to fit the batter that was about three inches deep and then cut it into the inner fender liner right behind the front radiator support. When cut in like that the box is supported at its top edge on one end and at the bottom by the cut out. Does that make any sense? Hope so.

Thumbs up

*************:
I'm Resto-Rodding my 1953 Mercury M100 way up hear in the true White North and I moved my battery to put a second gas tank under the passenger side.
I cut the inner fender on the passenger side and fabricated a box into the fender, up close to the headlight, to clear the front tire (with travel room). I have a small soder-core welder and patience!
I took a stock gas tank, closed the filler neck, and soldered in a copper, 3/4" 45 degree elbow. on both tanks and ran a crossover pipe made from rubber hose, the 1" size used on the fuel pumps at your local gas station. I supported it from the tranny crossmember, and made a 1/4"plate steel sheild to protect it from road debree (sp?). The system is vented on the passenger side and filled through the driver side, through a Hagens, filler door I added at the stock location.
I'm running a 5.0L fuel injected engine and it works fine, but you could do it for a carburated systme even easier since you wouldn't need the return lines.
In my application, I reversed the stock gas tank on lthe passengers side and that makes for a very tight fit since they are shaped to fit the arc of the cab.

Sounds like what I want to do and it does sound like the way to go to get a 32 gallon capacity. That ought to keep the truck on the ground. Ed

"53 Merc,

I read your post about adding the second fuel tank, and that begged the question for me, what did you do for a fuel pump in the first tank? In tank or external? I don't have a tank and have been thinking about a poly tank in the stock 55 location but I don't know if an in tank fuel pump can be adapted. John"

John,
I used an external pump, that I bought new from a local jobber -(parts supplier to the industry). You could modify the tank and set up an internal pump but I didn't need to do any major work to my driver's side tank and I wasn't sure about the depth set up and "sucking air" so I went external. I fabricated a bracket that I bolted to the bottom of the frame rail and used two oversized hose clamps to secure the pump to the bracket...very close to the pick-up that I installed at the bottom of the tank.

It's working, I don't have my tank at the rear crash zone, the weight is distributed better, there's no switch to switch tanks, only one fill point, and I get a longer run on the superhighways of the 21st century between fill-ups! (I hope) While the truck is running, I haven't finished painting the cab b4 installing the glass so I'm a few months from "ON THE ROAD AGAIN...!

Cheers,

GW - "53Merc"

If I was going to move my battery, it would go to the rear to avoid aggravating the front heavy condition of these trucks.

Where too in the rear. I am very aware of a trucks front heavy nature but I do want to make it an easy move and very easy to get to. Ed

Fatfenders. Ok I saw your truck. What front end do you have and what is the steering box from. Do you think you should be molesting your daughters barbies by allowing them alcohol. What did the steering column come from. Ed
