Hi to all, new on this board; just got back in the Ford camp with a 2001 SD F250 5.4L with 4.10 diff. Noticed the "new"
factory oil spec is for 5-20. I'm assuming this is a petroleum oil as I saw only petroleum based oil at the auto parts (Castrol I believe was one). My questions are: 1) what's this thin stuff all about? 2) has anyone switched to say 5-30 Mobil 1 synthetic?
3) if so, how long did you wait for break in, etc;
It's really hot here, and I just think I would feel better with 5-30 synthetic. Is there any reason why the 5.4 would not do well with a tiny bit thicker synthetic? Thanks in advance.
The reason you see 5w-30 ect. recomended in many new cars and trucks is because of the overhead cam design and oil flow on cold startups. Having the cam on top of the motor tends to lead to dry starts and cam wear with the heavier oil. As for synthetic oil it is great but wait till there is 10-15000 miles on the engine or your rings won't seat right.
Sure hope the rings are set by 1000 miles; most stuff today is ready after a hundred or so.
Ford says little or no-break-in required;
BTW, FWIW, I called Ford Customer Service (after dealership
dodged my questions) and their guy says Mobil-1 5-30
is fine, and the ONLY reason they came up with this 5-20
was to improve fuel economy! Also stated it would NOT void my warranty. So, I'm planning my switch to Mobil-1 around 800- 1000 miles.
Thanks all.

New guy here, I have a 2001 250 SD 5.4 4-wd and had the oil delema. I run Ontario to Florida regularly and temp. can be -30 degrees at home to plus 90 degrees in the south. I also pull about 7500 lbs. The Ford dealers on the road had no straight answers about 5w-20. I had some say you had to use it for warranty, the engine can't handle 30 and above weights... The dealer where I bought the truck OKed using Quaker State 5w-50 synthetic. So far no grief, the engine starts quieter, runs smother, longer drain intervals...tme will tell
I use the mobil 1 in my 99sd 250 w/5.4 4:10 rears auto because i like the added protection of the synthetic. But as long as a person follows a scheduled maintainance program the petro based products are fine because we now have better oils than ever.
The change in oil viscosity i think was due to a couple of factors such as fuel economy and the design of the motor.
Good luck with your truck!
I realize this has been discussed to death......
My local Valvoline representrative said, that 5-20 was for gas mileage improvements only, that the synthetic or synthetic blends were reccomended to offset the breakdown of the 20W oil at higher temperatures. His advice, Use 5-30 and take the gas mileage hit.
