My problem is that when I drive more than about 1/2 hr (on highway) I will open the hood to find much of the engine compartment covered in oil. It wasn't bad until I recently drove 5 hrs and the engine compartment (pretty much everywhere) was saturated and I had lost about 2 qts of oil. I was thinking it might be the breather setup. Currently there are the chrome push in breathers on each valve cover with edelbrock air cleaner. Does this sound right or do I need to hook up breather hoses? This is my first ford so I don't know what is a good setup. My thinking for the breather setup is because there is quite a bit of oil smoke coming out of the push in breathers at idle. Is this normal or might I have some bad news coming? Any help would be appreciated.
I don't know how "stock" your engine is, but the description sounds as if you have no pcv system installed. On my 77 351M, the oil return comes to the air cleaner from the rear of the passenger side valve cover. The line to the pcv valve comes from the rear base of the carburetor, runs to the pcv valve which is in the breather on the front of the driver side valve cover.
I have never run my engine without pcv so I don't know if that is the cause of your problem. It's something to look at though.
You REALLY need the PCV system as first described. It is good for you and the rest of the world. You are upsetting carb calibration and if it is open you are also sucking dirt in. RH side grommet and fitting are available at the dealer, at least. E7AZ*6A892*A and C8AZ*6767*B (just replaced mine and had receipt sitting on desk.) LH side is all common parts. Degrease and check for more leaks after doing this. It is my suspicion that the filler cap also serves as an oil separator. My aftermarket cap is a stamped pieces that weeps a bit at the crimp line... the stock cap may be a better item. GL
When you say the other side is standard parts is that just a straight through fitting with hose attaching to air cleaner? Also when referring to LH and RH do you mean truck L and R or looking at engine L and R?
RH and LH are always from sitting in the driver seat.
So on the passenger side (RH) from valve cover hole you need: grommet, right ange fitting, 5/8" vapor hose, to aircleaner fitting, which normally has a fiber filter inside seperate from the air cleaner element.
On the driver side (LH) you need a oil filler cap, that the PVC valve fits into, that connects to the fitting on the back of the carb with (I think) 1/2 vapor hose. I am fairly the stock applications used a U-shaped steel tube between the cap and the carb fitting (connected with two hoses, of course) to avoid kinking the hose.
Until I read a manual recently, I thought the hose to the air cleaner just let fresh air into the engine, but flow actually reverses sometimes to send blow-by gases up to the fresh-air intake. The PVC valve is a pretty important for a 1.19 part we take for granted. It plays an important part in regulating the flow of vapor to the intake, and, incidentally, prevents back-fire vapors from traveling the wrong way. Not to mention huge reduction in air pollution at little or no cost.
