My explorer has been leaking trans fluid for the past week or so. Funny thing is that whenever I checked the fluid level it showed that the level was just fine. At any rate, I took a look at the trans and the leak seems to be coming from the rear seal. I decided to put 1/2 quart of fluid in the tranny just to be safe while I drove it home yesterday, but ALL of the fluid dispursed on the ground as if something bursted!! Again, it looks like it is coming from the rear seal. As far as shifting gears, it seems like everything is ok although I heard a little grinding noise before I put the fluid in. It drove home just fine though with no noise although the shifting was just a little ruff. Is it difficult to change the rear seal? Should the front seal be changed as well? Any suggestions? I am somewhat mechanically inclined and I have dropped a tranny before, but never on this vehicle. Any advice or suggestions will be deeply appreciated. thanks!!!!!
You did not specify if yours is 2WD or 4WD, but at any rate, tailshaft seal is fairly easy to replace. Drop the driveshaft (inspect the yoke outer face for signs of scoring) then R&R the seal. You may need to purchase a seal driver tool but I have been able to do it without one. Just go slowly and tap it in evenly on all sides. As a side note, try to get a new seal that is double lip type. Helps keep crud out away from the inner seal lip. Original seal has a boot extension forming the second lip and is most preferable if available.

Thanks for the speedy reply!! It is a 2WD. Does is sound like I may have any other tranny problems that I need to heck for once I drop it? Should I change the front seal also or is that a more difficult task?? Thanks in advance!!!
Personally, I would not drop trans now and change front seal unless you have other associated problems that need to be addressed. This trans is rather finicky and sometimes it is better left alone if all else is OK. Since it is a 91, my guess it may have already been thru 1 rebuild any way (unless you know different.) You may want to run some Trans_X thru it to cut any varnish and soften up internal seals (may help rough shifting issue), then drain fluid, flush system and replace filter as preventative measures. Be sure to check around speedo gear for your leak also. It does not take much trans fluid to look like a big leak, especially when it gets pushed all over the rear of trans by wind during driving. Best way to be sure where leak is, clean all oil residue off transmission and check for the new wet spot.
