I need to replace the front seal around the harmonic balancer, I have the chiltons but its not so good, any one with help or advice, is it a hard job.
Steven
remove balancer pull old seal put in new one. might be easier if you pull the radiator but i'm pretty sure you can work around it if your carefull. the fan cluch& shroud, belt should be all you need to get out of the way. the fan clutch is easiest to remove while the belts still attatched just smack the end of the wrench with a hammer to break it loose or use an air chisel on the corner of the nut. you'll need a puller for the dampener. shouldn't be too bad. i don't know what the chilton says but they probably want you to pull the whole motor. just don't bust the radiator whatever you do.
He is not suggesting you pull the motor only remove the balancer but to remove it you must have the correct tool to do so. You only have to remove the cover if you have an older style timing cover and I have forgotten what year ford changed the seal from an inner to an outer. I would bet you have the outer seal which is only about a 1 hour job or so.
What year car/truck is it? I am guessing it's a bronco?
Hi that is great news about not having to pull the cover, I have a 1990 5.0 in a full size bronco. I dont mind taking parts like waterpump etc off, I just dont want to touch the oil pan. The oil pan and the rear seal are NOT leaking and if I touch the oil pan it WILL start to leak.
So I don't need to pull of the timing chain cover for my year Bronco?
The seal can be removed and put back on with the cover on the motor?
What special tools to remove/replace the seal?
I already have a harmonic balancer puller.
Yes you can just replace the seal from the outside and as for special tools for the seal just pull the old one out anyway you can with tearing the cover up and I like to use a 4x4 block of wood to drive the new seal in nice a square. Also oil up the seal a bit before you install the dampner. This will keep the seal from being started up dry which can be hard on them.
make sure you don't knick the crank when pulling the seal. most of the time a screw driver will pop the old one out sometimes you can drive a sheetrock screw in it and pull it out with visegrips. put oil or grease in the inner lip of the new seal and clean up the damper boss or else the new seal will melt and leak. good luck man
