I've got some general questions about exhaust work.
I've seen cats and mufflers with flanges, I've seen them welded together, and I've seen them with sleeves and clamps holding them together.
I like doing exhaust work when it's all flanges, but everything is welded on the vehicles that I own. Is it advisable/possible to cut things out with a cutting wheel, then use couplers and clamps to put everything back together? I'm sure that clamps are not the best solution, but I don't weld. I'm specifically interested in changing out the cat on my Bronco, but I'm thinking that the air pipe coming off of it might be a problem.
Will you be replacing it with a stock unit, or a high flow cat? Do you know that there are high flow Y pipes with cats made for our broncos? I prefer an exhaust system to be clamped together (that way Im not limited to flanges..quick repairs). It allows for movement due to road inputs, as well as thermal expansion over time...not to mention changing items easily like you want.
I'd prefer to replace it with a high-flow cat. I see everybody recommending the Bassani setup, but I have budget constraints. The high-flow cats that I've seen on Summit have 3" ports, so I'll have to keep looking.
I was worried that clamped setups would be more prone to leak, but if that's not the case, then great.
They only leak when they are the incorrect size, as well as not installed properly. Clamps arent just clamps anymore. I know on my Bassani, they included flat band clamps that have a much larger surface contact area. They also used a hex bolt assembly to tighten the complete band, rather than the two threaded bolts.
