Ken or anyone who can provide advice: My 1705 installs quickly and easily. Performance enhancement is noticable and welcome, especially when off the line acceleration is needed. Using the towing mode (lower hp setting) has been worth the $$$. My one problem is that I'm noticing black sooty looking smoke when under hard acceleration. When I return it to the stock mode, all is well. hmmmmm. Got any ideas? thanks, Mike
This is completely normal. The tuner increases fueling and changes injection timing in order to gain horsepower. Smoke is the result of unburnt fuel. If you want to decrease the smoke, lower EGTs and increase performance, add an aftermarket air intake system.
Thanks Ken, that's what I was hoping to hear. . . now it's time to look for the intake system with the most bang for the $$$ . . . any recommendations? Mike
What kinda vehicle. The mac intake seems to be a good value, although I would look for a true cold air kit with a heat shield so you get the full benefit of the kit. The heat shield keeps the intake air cooler making it densor giving you more air giving you more power and mileage.
Thanks for the input. Sorry I didn't provide the id info'. Have done two cross country runs with no major problems. Mike
AFE makes a great intake with a heat shield that seals up with the hood. MAC makes a good intake kit as well (without a heat shield). There are also many Tymar fans but they take a different approach (larger filter that must be replaced, not washed and reoiled like the cotton filters AFE, MAC, Airforce One, etc. use).
