hey I got a friend with a short bed standard cab 2wd f-150 with the 4.9 and a 5 speed, my question is: will my heavier v8 whoop him? my trucks tips the scales with a 302, 4wd, auto tranny, and the supercab. i know hes got me on weight, but will the v8 beat the I-6? only 2 cubes more, does the engine design make that big difference?
It's not the cubes, but how they are made. The 300 i6 uses a bore of 4.00 with a stroke of 3.960 to equal the 300 cid in six cylinders. While on the other side of the engine plane there is the 302 with its 4.00 bore, but only a 3.00 stroke. Because of its short stroke the 302 has the advantage in being able to accelerate through, and reach its maximum rpm’s faster then the 300. Another example of this is the Contaches 427CID V12 compared to the Ford side oiler 427. Both engines have the same CID, but with the V12 only having 60% of the stroke of the V8 it can scream to 9000 rpm’s in about half the time.
There is no doubt in my mind that your friends truck will win. I have driven the same type trucks you are describing and the automatic really slows things down plus the front wheel drive. If the I6 and the 302 were both trying to grow up and be race motors the 302 would be in the lead but you are pushing too much truck.
well, if the boy can drive stick i think he might have me. the auto tranny i think slows me down quite a bit. 1-2 it sometimes chirps the tires its so firm but 2-3 and on it's buttery smooth and slow as hell. one things for sure... mines gonna sound like it's winning i love that 5.0 sound
What about rear end gears and tire sizes..those will have a large affect on the outcome.
Primary rig is:

Pictures are in!!
Then theres:

95' Mercury Cougar 4.6L V-8
80' E-350 300/6 with a

Well what are you waiting for? Line em up! I never debate with my buddies on whose car is faster. I just say "see you at the strip on friday". I really felt good when I smoked a co workers Plymouth Prowler. Not a big feat but he found out the truth!
The difference between the 300 I6 and the 302 V8 actually is about 0.8 cubic inches (300.06 vs 300.8) and if the actual liters are figured out and correctly rounded, both engines are 4.9L (just a technical point--not to offend any Mustang 5.0 drivers). More important than a couple of cubes is the valve timing, rpms, and compression ratio.

My father has a 302 in his 94 supercab 4x4 automatic 3.55 gears and he walks my dog. I just can't keep up with him when accelearating from any speed. However, for hauling a load or towing our tractor mine is the work-horse, there's no comparison.

The str8 six 300 is a torque monster that I would put my money on for the short drag but in the longer run the quicker revving 5.0 will prove victorious auto or not. Third gear and the 4.9 gets a lil' sluggish... me and my bud had single cab short boxes (his a manual 91 w/4.9 mine an auto 90 w/351) and off the go he would squeak by a lil' but as soon as i switched gears the juice would let loose and he'd jus hear my exhaust note But I still love that str8 6... i'd gas up for more often than he did. Oh well...
