has anybody ever had any problems with reusing a flywheel with lots of surface cracks in it, resurfaced or not. i have little money and can not buy a new one and they old ones i see are screwed. i have had 1 good machinist that i use tell me that it would work just fine and a ford tech look at it and say " oh yeah get it resurfaced and reuse it." it is going in a street built stang so i want it to work and not come apart through my car.
it has hot spots too but the machinist said those will clean up and maybe some of the little cracks will get cleaned up too. i am taking it today to show him to see what he thinks now that he will see it
I would first determine how deep the cracks were and go from there. If they are only 0.010" to 0.015" deep it will take a good cleanup pass. If it's more I would check the thickness (don't know factory specs for this) just to make sure it's never been resurfaced before. If it will hold thickness tolerances afterwards - go for it.
I know flywheels that have been resurfaced multiple times, but these surface cracks were just superficial heat cracks and not heat plus stress cracking.
If you are building a fast Mustang, I'd give serious thought to buying a billet steel flywheel (~$200.00)
It's a lot cheaper than the medical bills after the flywheel comes apart.
