Tire sizes 2002 Explorer
My wife's 2002 Explorer will need tires probably by next winter. It's an XLS model with the 4.0 V-6. I'd like to go up a size or two on the OEM rims and use BFG TA's like what I'm running on my truck. Anyone had a problem with this? What up size is common on the stock rim? This is my first experience with one of these. I mostly fool with the full size trucks. I want to be gentle with this tranny, since it is sealed (dumb idea).

I believe hight wise, 31" is as big as you can go. For width, stay at or below a 10" wide tire. I test fitted a set of 31x10.5s (BFG M/Ts I was selling for a guy) on my father's '03 and they fit fine.
Depending on what your gear ratio is, you may not even see a real difference in MPG and HP. The 4.0 is a good engine and I've seen people run 35s with 3.55 gears.

The stock tires are 235/75R16. If you don't care about the speedometer being off than yes you can go larger. My 2002 EB has 245/70R16s. I know mine are tight in the front wheel wells when i make a hard turn to the right or left. I think that would be your limiting factor unless you install a lift.
