spare tires

I am new to the forum of Explorers and Mountaineers. I purchased a mtn eer and heard there is a problem with explorers ( I am supposing a first cousin to the mtneer ) loosing the spare tire due to the cable rotting and breaking. Is this true ?? Can a person use cable lube to prevent this from happening ? Thanks for your time. Bill

Unless I missed something, I cannot assume that you bought an '04 because you never meantioned what year it was. I have a 98...not probs with spare tire cable. ACtually ...the tire is so well tucked under the truck that there is little or no visibility of the cable and you cannot even see the tire unless you go underneither.

There have been some reports of the cable breaking over time, due to corrosion and the tire being wound up too tight. If you periodically check the cable and put some lithium grease on it you should be ok. You can also purchase one of those cables that locks the tire so that if the stock cable does break the other will catch it.

M40 .. it is an 04. I just read that the cable seems to get rusted out, I suppose due to the salt and water spraying under the vehicle and getting caught up in the spare tire area (vacuum) and not airing out properly. I was wondering if a spray cable lube would be the answer to displacing the moisture and preventing the "tire drop" problem. Thanks for the time ... Bill
