oil change

Was wondering if anyone out there ever noted how much oil they got out of their engine(7.3L) during an oil change. Changed mine twice now since getting my truck. Both times got 12-13 quarts, including oil from drained filter. This normal? I have a slight leak in the turbo area. I believe its coming from the lines I've seen mentioned in several posts.

The volume held in the filter element easily accounts for 1-2 quarts when fully saturated.
I think your 12-13 is about right.

I understand about the residual oil remaining in the engine and the oil filter being saturated. I figured a drained filter would still have about a pint remaining in it. The residual oil in the engine was there when I filled it with the 15 qts. So theoretically you would get maybe 14.5 qts back out. Not trying to be **** here, just want to understand the oil usage of a diesel so I can see if I'm developing any problems in the future. On a gas engine 2.5 to 3 qts of oil lost over 5000 miles would indicate a problem ie: leakage or burning. Changed the oil in our Explorer same day and got back 4.5 qts. Not tryin to compare gas to diesel, I know the two are different. My basic question is " Do diesel engines as a course of normal operation use oil and how much?" Thanks for your responses.

I usually add a quart or so of oil between oil changes. I'm pretty sure that it's normal for a diesel to use a little oil - especially a turbo charged one. That's why there's oil in the intake tract - 'cause Ford put the crankcase vent into the intake - so that it's not going out into the air. So my answer is yes it's normal to use a little oil between changes
