Question Carb application-302

My friend has a 72 bronco with a rebuilt 302 .30 over with a 500 lift cam headers. the guy put a 600 holley on it and it runs way too rich, I was thinking a 390 4bbl might do the trick but I dont want to be too conservative. I had a 68 stang with a 2 bbl and it ran great. anyway any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

600 should be fine, sounds like some jetting is needed to make it work right?

I also put a holley 600 on my 302 h.o. and had the same problem. I rejetted to a 64 and cleared up alot of the eye burning rich smell at the stop light.

A lot depends on what kind of Holley 600 carb it is. If it's a double-pumper it is designed for racing and full-throttle application. Even Holley advises double-pumpers are not designed for street-use. They are set up rich and a simple jet change will not cure that problem as their intermediate circuits, air-bleeds, etc. are set up different.
I have read other posts that the Truck-Avenger series of carbs appear to be set rich from the factory also...Holley does not say this but other off-roaders have posted they do seem to run rich from their experiances and have had to make some jetting changes
If you have a vacuum-secondary 600 it should be set up just about perfect for your application right out of the box. 600 CFM is not over-carbed for 302 c.i.
A cam-change and headers normally will lean an engine out and will require you to richen the jetting a little...are you sure that carb is stock or has it been modded in anyway?
