Have a 1994 F150 5.0 engine with AODE tramission. When driving transmission will downshift from overdrive to next gear by itself and then it will upshift back to overdrive by it,s self. This is on a level road. Think.
That is normal for any transmission left in O/D that is working properly to shift in and out. That is also not good for the O/D gear in the tranny, they tend to burn out much faster. You should click the button on the shifter to turn off O/D unless you are on the highway.
I bumped the base timing up to 15 BTDC on my 95 and this really helped the power of the engine. The O/D does not hunt near as bad as did when the base timing was set at 10 BTDC.
This is happen on level highway. You can be driving at 65 mph and all of a sudden it's down shift for overdrive to next gear and stay their for a little while and then it' will up shift to overdrive. It's like you was talking about but you don't have to be going uphill of any kind.
