After I nail the gas and it starts to wind up it will backfire, one other thing, a guy I work with came and admired my work and told me that I should rip off the EGR valve and put a plate over it and take and plug the valve in the manifold. Well I just plugged them off and the truck seems to run like crap wont idle severe hesitation and I checked the timing and reset it and checked the vacuum and it is barely 15"Hg <--- Checked by pulling the brake booster line and attaching my guage there, is that right? One last thing I live in Montana where there is no emission controls so anything goes.

That is the correct vacuum reading--the EGR is vacuum controlled. Did you plug the vacuum line that was hooked to it?
Is it an exhaust backfire or thru the carb?

It feels as though the backfire is in the carb and I removed the EGR valve and fabricated an 1/8" steel plate to go where the valve bolted up. One other thing, the engine was reman. probably 8k ago and I cant seem to keep it in time I always set it at 12 degrees BTDC and after I rod it a little bit it will end up at about 2 to 6 degrees <---- Worn out distributor or chain <--- Both?

I use a edelbrock 750 4-v, i get about 13MPG and have a lot of power when i need it. Probably overkill, but i like it that way.
