Just curious, what are the differences between the Sterling 10.5 and the Dana 80? I understand that the Sterling is on the SRW and the 80 is on the DRWs. So what is the difference between these, is it more then the dual rear wheel hub?
While I don't have the specs in front of me right now......
From what I can remember I think that the Dana 80 has bigger axle shafts, carrier, ring and pinon, and is rated to handle more torque.
I do remember that the specs of the Visteon 10.5" are more similar to those of the Dana 70 HD.
The Dana 80 has a 2" pinion with 37 splines, a 11.5" ring gear and 1.57" diameter axles with 37 splines. The Dana 80 can handle up to 11000 lbs.
The Visteon 10.5" has a 1.94" pinion with 31 splines (I think), a 10.5" ring gear, 1.5" diameter axles with 35 splines. It can handle up to 6830 lbs.
Sterling (Ford Sterling Height Michigan plant) became part of Visteon in 2001. Visteon is a "spinoff" from Ford. They make all sorts of automotive related equipment like your instrument cluster, interior parts and such. It's kinda like Delphi is to GM. Same axles though. From 2001 forward, your axle tag will say 3V instead of 3S.
...just an FYI, the thread is 6 years old. Probably easier to start a new one.
The axle itself will be the same, the things welded to it might be slightly different. Spring perches should be the same, since on 350s blocks were used to set pinion angle. Shock mounts might be different since the frame rails are different on the chassis vs P/U models.
