Angry timing

let me give a brief description of situation. 82 full size, 351w
i drove it 1200 miles from 5000 feet above sea level to sea level.
it ran after that like lightning. The previous owner had a edelbroch kit installed , intake , cam and carb . It ran fast , wipe the floor with a camero, i know suprized me 2. Anyway it slowed down all by itself. I found vacum leaks and fixed them. I still had performance problems I found the edelcrap carb was garbage. Replaced with holley street avenger--much better performance. BUT still not like it was--What should my timing be set at 10 btdc or atdc also the dial indicator on the balancer has no point it has lik 3 points on it all spaced out . I hope someone knows what im talking about. I love my truck but everytime ive had to do something its been a pain in the ***. The street avenger i now use is a 770 I know its to big but this truck has no problem eating the gas. I have a 6a ignition box, and the other goodies that match so i know the spark is strong. I just keep thinking im missing something or the truck just ran like a raped ape because the long drive cleared the motor out or something. Any help would be great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
