I have a 97 150 with 4x4 and the extended cab and the small V-8 4.6 Liter? I think it is the old 302. It has 200k miles runs fine except up hills. It still runs fine just slows and I have to down shift. (It is also a manual trans). I just bought a 14' enclosed trailer to haul my sons micro midget. Now it really slows going up any hill. I have thought about up grading to the 351 Windsor (5.2L?) Is there any problems making this conversion? Any kits of the misc. parts.? Your thoughts.
Thank you
Chuck Templeton
I have seen no kit to change over to a pushrod engine. Nothing will bolt up to it.
Your 4.6L is a Modular Engine. It has overhead Camshafts and other than being a V8 and built by Ford, they 4.6 and 302/351 are totally 2 different animals.
Stick with a 4.6 for a replacement. Ford has a 5.0 Modular engine coming out, but it is very expensive and has DOHC heads, so I don't know how easy it would be to swap it out either.
OH, even my 35,000 mile 5.4L downshifts on most hills, it is the nature of the beast.
