Sounds like a wiring problem from the changer to the head unit. I have had a similar problem with my 99, but mine will start out with good audio on both sides, and if I hit the right bump, the left side audio cuts out by 50%.
I'm thinking becuase the head unit was sent in for repair right after I bought the truck......that's where I need to start? Hopefully a plug has worked loose, or a wire is loose
Well...I would first check that the RCA's coming from the cd changer are operating properly. Maybe get a cheap replacement set and try them out...if this does not show any change in sound....simply return them. I would not think it to be the out's going from the head unit to the speakers because if the tuner comes out properly...that could not be it. It has to be between the changer and head unit. RCA for sure!....check RCA terminals on both peices of equipment also.
Q for ya, how do I get into the cd unit? As in do I need to remove it somehow to look at the RCA's? Are they under it and fed through the bottom of the console somewhere?
Well...To get behind the factory unit you will first need to remove the dash panel. Since it just pops out...this shouldnt be a problem. Next you will need whats known as a DIM tool to remove your head unit. If you look at your head unit you will notice 2 holes on each side...these are where the DIM tool are inserted to pop the head unit out. Go to a local car audio shop or dealer to have them pop it for you...just leave it sticking out beyond the clips snapping back into place untill you are finished with your work. I found that if you need to keep it out you can disconnect it...put the panel back on...then slide the head unit through the panel. Its clips will lock onto the panel and hold it in place, but can still be removed. As for your RCA cables, check to see where your changer is. I would recommend doing it like this:
pull out the head unit and unplug RCAs. Disconnect RCAs from the cd changer. Run a new RCA wire directly between the two through the interior of the vehicle. If your problem seems to be remedied, disconnect the RCAs from the changer and run them in a more conceiled manor. You can go down behind your dash in either direction depending on which side the changer is on. Then simply lift the foot panels by the doors to tuck it away for a clean finish. A good rule of thumb is, run the wiring the same way that ford did...as they enginer some odd stuff on these vehicles, (spark plug locations damnit) they do run wiring sufficiently. Hope this helps.
Sorry, I might have given you some useless info. Does your expy have a CD changer or a single CD player? Is the changer located elsewhere in the vehicle or is it an indash changer? GIMME THE DETAILS MAN!!!!
