Steering Wheel Noise

I have a 01 PSD, Super Cab 4x4. The last couple of months I have been noticing a whining noise in the stearing wheel when I turn to the right or left. Feels like there is some resistance on the wheel also. Front end is tight. Any ideas as to what my problem is.

Have you checked the fluid level in the power steering pump?

Yes the fluid level is fine. A mechanic friend is telling me it could be my steering box and that it is about 300.00 for just the box, excluding labor. Sounds pricy to me.

I had a similar problem on my '02 without the resistance you're talking about, and it turned out to be some sort of steering wheel boot in the cab. Drove me nuts until it was changed - seemed to be worse when it was cold out. I guess it depends on where you are hearing the whining from - inside the cab or out.
