Another 3 speed overdrive question

I read a previous thread about a 3 speed overdrive transmission. When I bought my 1960 ford 4x4 the previous owner put in a 3 speed overdrive transmission and hooked it up to the 3 speed column shifters. It has no engine now but they said it had a 390 in it at the time. The numbers I could make out on the right side of the case are T-85 then C-1A (not sure about the last 3 letters/numbers). Are there some more identifiers? The owner said it came out of a old mercury. Are these transmissions worth anything? I was thinking of just gettng rid of it because I wanted to put back in a 4 speed T98 A. Any help would be appreciated.

The T-85 is a tranny used by Ford. I know they used them on 56-57 T-Bird 312s. The OD is a separate part. It bolts to the tranny. Check for numbers on the casting rearward of the solenoid. The OD unit should have R11 (maybe R10) cast on the case. I've heard the T-85 is a medium tranny. I believe they were used on Ford trucks. Wish I had one for my 57.

I found the number R-11 just as you said. The transmission doesn't seem really heavy duty compared to the 4 speed. Are these transmissions fairly rare and do they improve mileage that much? Thanks for your help.

I can only speculate , but these trannys were used in Ford cars and trucks for quite awhile. A while back there was a rebuilt T-85 on ebay. It went for $50.00 plus $50.00 shipping. Again, I think these trannys are medium duty.
