hi i have a 92 explorer and the trans will not go into drive when it's cold ,it does go into 2nd if you change it manually. after about a mile it will shift fine as long as it stays warm, does anyone know what the problem might be , if so please help? i have changed the fluid , filter , and the modulater valve, and none of this has helped hopefully someone can stear me in the right direction on what i can do , thank you
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...but you need to have that rebuilt. We just got a '93 that had that problem. If its automatic, its a A4LD tranny. They commonly have problems. If you changed the fluid, you just made it worse. When we got our '93, it had to be manually shifted until we got to about 50 mph, then we could put it in drive and it did ok. We also lost overdrive. We took it in and had more than one place take a look, everything inside was trash. We put $1550 into it (also needed new t-case), now its fine. Sorry!
Not necessarily. What do you mean it doesn't go into drive? Are you saying it doesn't shift out of first or it fails to engage and you have to start in manual 2. There are a couple of things you can do.
my trans will act like it goes into neutral when it shifts into drive , if i pull it into second and keep it there for about a half a mile it will then shift through all the gears perfectly evey time it only acts up when it is cold , the fluid and filter helped just a little but not completely , i had a mechanic look at this and he said the inside of the trans looked to be ok , i still have overdrive and it works fine it just want shift own it's own like the shifting is not in sink or something but after it gets warm it shifts just fine hope you can help thank you
Sounds like the speed governor is sticking. This is located in the extension housing and has a steel valve that gets chatter marks on it that make it stick. It can be removed and polished with very fine sandpaper and oil. A little work but at least the transmission doesn't have to be removed. Can provide more details if interested. Is this 4WD?
yes i am very interested and this is 4x4, i just bought this truck and would like to fix it as cheap but right without a tranny shop taking me to the bank (lol) i have built all kinds of motors and straight drives but never messed with an auto so any advise would be greatly appreciated, don't know if this will help but the truck only has 81000 miles on it , thank you for your reply,

In "General Explorations" at the same site there are also some pictures in "My A4LD rebuild diary" page4 of the first one or in part two. You do not have to worry about sleeving it, just polish it. If you are caerful, you can do it by just removing the transfer case. Old gasket can likely be patched with silicone sealer. Then you can try the low/reverse servo seal. Transmisions are fun.
