My 02 starts fine but runs very rough (like 4 out of 8 cyls). I am thinking CPS but need help from you all. Is there a way to test the sensor? I checked the fuel out of the drain and changed fuel filter . Clean fuel and 3-4 drops of water. Truck ran OK for 2.5 miles and them check engine light can on and back to bad idle. Pulled another gallon of fuel out and the light and idle are still there. Maybe the CPS goes bad when it heats up. Please help.
What kind of codes do you have. The cps sensor.Do you mean the CMP cam position sensor. That is how ford symbols it.If you have warter in fuel codes you might have some damaged injectors. In 02 the injectors were the revised ones to help not damage as quickly from warter in the fuel but they can still damage.I would start with what codes you get.I would also do a cylinder contribution test to see if there are any weak cylinders and if there are which ones.
Typically, when a CPS goes out, the truck dies. They don't merely run badly. I'd suspect something else. One quick and easy thing to check is the connections of the wiring harness at the valve covers. If one of those isn't making a good connection, two of your injectors wouldn't fire properly. There are two connections at the top of each valve cover.
Good luck.
I dont have a scanner but the truck is under waranty so ford can figure it out. It goes into the shop monday morning. This only happens when it is warmed up. The standard answer from the mechanic was that there was to many possibilities and to just bring it down. When I get the answer i will post it.
Well it turned out to be the injector drive module (IDM). After a very active discusion with them they are replacing it. While looking for it they found a leak in the oil pan and have to pull the engine. I will see what kind of a difference the new module makes when I get it back.
Well I got the truck back and it was the IDM, I guess I was running on 5 cylinders. The truck has alot more power and after the 10K mod I have to watch for cops more often. Oh and Ford priced the IDM at $599.
