I just took possession of a 99 EB and am thinking of getting some extra keys made.
Can I use just a regular key or do all the Expy keys have a chip in them that has to be "programed" ?
If the key is "fat" on top it is the security type key. Also, look at the top of the instrument cluster above the speedometer, the word "theft" will flash every few seconds if you have it.
Now if you do have the security system, which is called PATS, then you need two keys to program the other keys. If you only have one, the dealership has to use its diagnostic module to program the second.
A regular key will turn the engine over but the security module will not allow it to start. You must have a PATS key to operate the vehicle
I keep three keys at all times. It takes two to program a new key on '99 and newer (and maybe some '98s?). That way if you lose a key you only have to get one key cut and you can program it yourself.
The keys can be found on ebay for $10-$15 each (search for PATS keys). I got two for $25 w/free shipping a while back.
Call to your local locksmiths and compare prices. I found a guy that cut and programmed two keys (actually three programmed because your old code gets erased and a new code put on your old key) for $40. It takes about 15-20 minutes to erase and reprogram the keys.
