I realize you have a gas engine..........but for example...........we had several amulances with broken turbos. It seems downshifting with the O/D produces alot of stress. In diesels, its the turbo that usually pays. So, I would say even in a gas engine, something is paying the price.
If you're doing alot of towing and like to use the engine to slow down, they do make exhaust brakes (Jake Break) for diesels, maybe for gas too.

I don't think you're doing anything bad to it. I often drive with OD locked out on hilly roads when I'm in the Taurus or the E150. If I keep them in OD, they get away from me quickly. Supposedly, OD is the weak gear in any tranny, so I would imagine using drive instead of OD would be a good thing.
