4 wheelin', mud, and ABS
Yesterday my buddy, who has a Toyota 4-Runner, called me up… he was stuck out on a trail… needed to be yanked out. After ensuring the the brush and trees weren't TOO bad, I agreed to come get him (hey, this rig only 6 weeks old!). So another buddy, who also has a 4-Runner, and I went out, and I yanked him out. Of course, the other 4-Runner got stuck on the way in, so then we yanked him out as well. So far, so good.
On the way out, I got stuck! (I slid off high ground sideways in to a mud bog… bottomed out on my diffs trying to go forward). Poof… there goes my ego. Both 4-Runners tried to pull me out.. to no avail (this F350 PSD is HEAVY!!). Finally we hooked up both 4-Runners, and as they yanked like crazy, I was able to get enough traction to get out… whew. (Thank you Ford for both front eyelets).
During this process, lots of tire spinning in the mud went on. My right side tires were probably 75% submerged. My ABS indicator light came on. I would imagine this was mud packing in to one of the wheel hubs and gunking up the wheel position sensor. The diff was never submrgered, so I imagine the speed sensor in it is fine. Now to the questions:
1) Any special procedures for cleaning up the wheel position sensors? I plan on removing the wheels to clean everything out. Is high-pressure water OK? What about brake cleaner?
2) I've heard that folks have had issues with the aluminum wheels seizing on the steel hubs. I figure while I've got 'em off, I might as well try to prevent this… especially with winter coming. What are people using for an anti-seize compound?
3) While the wheels are off, anything I can do to clean-up the auto-locking hubs in the front?
4) Any other thoughts regarding the ABS system? Has this ever happened to anybody else?
5) As I mentioned, above, neither diff was submerged, so I'm not planning on draining/re-filling them, but any other post-play items I should take care of? (Speaking of which, has anybody relocated their diff breather ports higher-up on the chassis?)
