Wiring

O.K., i have searched this forum for about 45 minutes now, and i still cant seem to find the answer im looking for. i have a 95 f-150, 300, 4wd.....im trying to wire it to a 4 flat so i can tow my trailer. whoever had the truck before me should be smacked..lol...the wiring is a mess....when i plug the 4 flat into my trailer and flip on a turn sigmal to check to make sure they are working..the back-up lights on my truck come on???..is this a ground problem? does anyone have a diagram of the f-150 to know what wires to splice into?

I have 2 possible solutions:

1 - the easiest way may be to try and pick up the pre-made T-connector for your truck, you then unplug the harness at the factory connection and plug the t-connector in between the two sides of the harness plug. I am not sure if you are still able to do this based on your description of the previous owner's work or not

2 - use a tester to id your tail, turn, and brake light wires and splice in from there.

what ever the case, it is critical that you confirm the ground you have at your trailer lights. a bad ground will screw everything up.

good luck

im gonna try to buy one of those t-connectors....whoever had the truck before...cut into the wiring right where the plug is..so now i have very little to work with....i was able to get my left turn signal to work, but my back up lights are still on..lol...so im going to go locate one of those t-connectors

just curious, has anybody else had problems with the t-connectors? I had 2 different ones in my ranger. both were fine as long as i didn't have anything hooked to it. when I pulled a trailer and used the turn signals a few times it would blow the turn signal fuse. it was even different trailers and 2 different connectors. soon as I wired it straight I had no problems. Dont know if there was some current leakge thru the tconnect or what. I've seen plenty of other people use them and have no problems though.

It sounds to me that the ground for the trailer is bad, have you tired physically hooking the trailer to the truck(coupler to ball)? When i baught my 1st trailer it had a bad ground, everything was messed up until we actually hooked the vehicle to the trailer, then all was fine. Maybe try that to see if it is the ground, thats what i would bet on!!

Trailer ground circuits are tricky at best, totally frustrating at worst. To test, run a separate ground wire directly from your truck to the ground post on your lights. If everything works fine, you know where your trouble is. You can either permanently install hard wire grounds to all of your trailer lights (I do this with boat and ARGO trailers that spend alot of time in the water) or install a new ground connection by drilling a new hole in your trailer frame and using stainless hardware to secure it. Over time, this hole will probably rust out and need to be scraped clean to remain functional. You can use WD-40 to help retard the rust without diminishing the circuit.

Good Luck!

I'd have thought the trailer at that time too, but it worked on another pickup without blowing the turn signal fuse. Any of the trailers I tried did the same. Finally got tired of it. Spliced it directly to the rear wiring, haven't had a problem now for 5 years. I know what you talk about with bad truck to trailer grounds. My current trailer does that every once in a while if its not used for a while. Just have to clean the ball and the trailer coupler. Even putting some antisieze on seems to help the connection.
