92 Explorer strange sounds
hahhaha, that's what I might do with mine. How many miles are on it, and is the tach doing anything weird. Does it sound like an engine problem or a suspention/brake problem.?
Yeah, thought about doing that myself but kind of like this Explorer so I want to fix it. It has 117k miles on it with a good used replacement motor done a few months ago and a rebuilt auto trans done 2 years ago. I am leaning towards suspension/brake problem since that hasn't been touched by me yet. Actually feels like the car is dragging something heavy and wants to stop! No warning lights and just had it smogged the day before this started. Any ideas?
I gotta wonder if the drive shaft is dragging. I know this sounds weird, but if the seal on the output shaft is damaged, or the output shaft bearing on the tranny is damaged, it can cause the drive shaft to drag. This might trigger the rear ABS (92's only came with rear ABS). The sensor for the ABS is in the differential. See where it might have an effect? As far as the hubs, I'm assuming you have 4WD, so I would look into the transfer case.
I'm not too savvy about transfer cases but I know that they have an affect on transmission function as they are geared together. If the transfer case slips into neutral, then the trans will feel like it's in neutral. Ergo, if the transfer case has worn or broken parts, it may cause the whole driveline to bind. Again, kinda out there but something to look at.
Keep us posted. Regards,
