It looks like I have decided on an X for towing my boat. I weighed the boat yesterday and am at 10,020lbs (trailer&boat weight) loaded with 700 pounds of hitch weight. The boat is on a tri axle trailer. I can not find a diesel in my $$$$(20,000) range and can't find any v10's with the 4.30 rear end. I plan to tow approx 3000 miles per year (no mountains..some medium hills). Will the v10 with the 3.73 get this job done? Thanks for any help.
I have the V10 with 3.73 gears. I tow a 25 foot toybox trailer at approximately 7000 lbs. It does fine on flat ground, 65 mph (true speed) in cruise and overdrive.
However, it doesn't take much of a hill to completely overwhelm the cruise and drop me down to 50-55 mph. Given another 3000 lbs makes me think the 4.3 is a better choice.
I would find a 4.3 ratio if I had it do over because here in CA I have to pull Cajon Pass (4200 feet at 6-7%) or the pass out of Baker (6000 ft or so) or the pass between 1000 Palms and the Arizona border every time I head out so that's quite a different story than Cincinnati, OH.
On flat ground at 60 mph (true speed) I run between 7 and 9 mpg depending on the type of fuel and ambient temperature. In the summer on the way to Havasu it can easily be 110º F. Last August we went to Nevada and pulled the pass out of Baker in 114º temps. The tranny temp remained in the middle even under those conditions.
