According to the owner's manual for my '95, I'm good for 5000 miles between oil changes, unless I subject the truck to "severe use", which includes towing, stop and go traffic, etc. Under those circumstances, the interval is cut to 3000 miles. I do some towing, and get stuck in stop and go traffic from time to time, so I keep it simple. I change my oil three times every 10000 miles. For example, I changed the oil at 160000, 163333, 166666, 170000, etc. One glance at the odometer, and when the last four digits are all threes or sixes, it's time for another change.
I buy Purolator filters from Sears for $2.99, and Delo 15W-40 oil from Costco in the six pack of gallons for $35. An oil change costs me about $25.
Using synthetic, especially with a bypass filter, will extend the interval. It gets a little spendy draining out synthetic unless you're getting some miles on it between changes.

quadzilla, are you saying you get nice purolater oil filters for 3 bucks! do they have them for the new 7.3L psd's? also do you run 15-40 in the winter? it seems like thats to thick for the winter.
