Electrical Problem

Around sept. - oct. I had a fuse wire burn out that goes to the engine harness for fuel pump and glow plugs on my 7.3L 89
F-250 4x4. I replaced the fuse wire and it the engine worked fine. Now what my problem is another fuse wire burnt up on the passenger side down by the battery. The wire connects to the siliniod and then splits off into many other wires one of those wires is the one that burnt up. The fuse wire connects to a yellow wire which according to a wiring diagram conects to the EEC power relay. I'm not sure where to begin b/c it looks like the wire goes all the way around the front of the engine compartment and into the cab. The engine was running and then quit, at first I figuered the fuse wire I replaced was burnt out b/c the "wait to start" light did not come on when I went to cycle the glow plugs to start the truck again after it stopped the light didn't come on the last time it burnt out, but I found that it was intact. Baffled I grabbed the voltmeter and turned the key to the run position to test the injector pump to see if it was getting any current. Before I could test it there was a sizzle and a large ploom of smoke riseing from the wires near the battery. What I would like to know is if the fuse wires burn out b/c they get old and can't take the current anymore. Or am I just hoping for a simple fix by just replacing the fuse wire where I probably have a short in the huge maze of wires somewhere.
