Hi,
92 Explorer front disk brake rotor
I took the wheel off to check the disk brake pads and saw the the rotor needs to be replaced ( deep groves in the pads and rotor). Do I need a special tool for removing the rotor, will a 2 or 3 prong puller work?
Will I need anything else beside the rotor? seals, bearings, while doing the rotor change?
Nothing special is needed, maybe a magnet. Been a couple years since I did it. There is a little half round key that locks the nut that isn't obvious. You tighten back with 35 ft-lb, back off and retighten to 16 INCH-POUNDS!!!!!!!!!!!! There are special tools for the nut, but I think I just used a chanel-lock.l
I just did my 93 explorer last month. All you should need is a magnet. You will see a large nut holding the rotor on. In the shaft there will be a slot. You can't see it, but there is a metal piece in that slot that prevents it from turning. A strong magnet should be placed against the slot which will draw out the locking pin. Once I removed that, the large nut was only hand tight so I didn't need a special wrench for it.
A simple pick set was all I needed when I had my 92. As for removing the rear seal, here's a neat trick.... take apart the front bearing and cam assembly. Then with the rear bearing still in place, put the nut back on and pull on the rotor. This will pop the rear seal and bearing. Hope that helps.... let us know how you make out.
