i dont know if im being over cautious here but if and when you weld try to make sure you dont have alot of gas in the tank and weld in a well ventilated area, and make sure that you cut the rot back to good metal and weld in your patch spot weld around it skipping over areas til you have it all welded solid. if would be better if you welded both sides of the patch if you can then you need to undercoat it all on the bottom and paint the top so it dont rot out again. You also need to make sure you dont have a water problem getting into that area its not a hard job j ust a little time consuming
like the other guy said make sure you dont have any wiring close by to the hole and also remember your safety keep TWO fire extingushers handy

if your not realy worried about it i mean it dont sound to big just cut back the rotted spot and then put tiger hair on it (fiber glass) and if its to big to just slap it on put tape over the whole then put the hair on it
