i have an 84 bronco with minor rust on the rear upper quarters(like all bronco) and on the bottoms of each doors. what can i do to fix this problem after i have it fixed? i noticed that there is a gap between the inner and outer panel and thats where all the rust occurs from trapped mud/water and debris. what should i do to stop this completely? can i cut a strip out of the inner panel or is there a better way?
Remove the wheel moldings and then sandblast the area to clean metal and clean out the pits. Put filler over it and then prime/paint it. Go to the inner wheelhouse and clean out that area too if the rust has eaten through that far and do the same procedure. If its undercoated then reapply that as the final stage.
As for the door skins you would want to do the same and then put a new bead of seam sealer on inside of the door where the outer skin folds over the shell. If your door skins are that bad you could either replace the skins, the whole door, or make a patch panel for the areas. The easiest would be new doors, but a good clean one may not be so easy to find. If you grind out that inner strip then you wouldn't be able to ever skin the door and you would have to use a patch panel. Try to keep the shell as complete as you can, it will make any job much easier.
