First off, welocme aboard!

Second, you should not type in caps, it gives the impression you are yelling..

Third, you may want to visit the transmission forum for this question. There will be some responses here I'm sure though, I cannot offer advice.

What year cruise-o-matic....?

If attached to a Y block they are diffuclt to a shop to rebuild them.

If attached to an FE you can replace with a C6

If attached to a 240 300 you can use a FMX or C4

cruise-o-matic

Thanx for the input guys. The transmisson is the original,I dont
know much about them.It seems to be pretty strong but does'nt
shift in to third gear all the time. What would or could be causing this? Also,is there a overdrive cable that should be hooked up
to the transmission?

There is no cable for overdrive unless it is a three seed manual?

All you should have is the kick down lever made of steel tubing.

Not shifting into third is a common problem.Usually a bad vaccume modulator or a collapsed or disconnected vaccume line

...My best advice is not to play with adjsting it as you say you know nothing about them..
Purchase a ford shop manual specific to your truck and it will detail how to adjust and trouble shoot the COM with the basics. Although it is shown i never figgured out how ford intended to get those tools in place on the thing with it still in the truck...

There isn't any overdrive cable on a Cruise-o-matic. There should be a kickdown rod going from the carb linkage to the tranny. You could try a modulator valve to see if it might help, but not shifting into 3rd all the time could also mean a sticky valve body. I would get it serviced with a good flush and while the pan is down have the valve body removed and checked over for sticky valves in it. Did the truck sit for a while before you bought it?

fixin66, I think the guys are missing the problem. The C-O-M uses the second drive or green dot as the main drive position. Try running it in the second position past neutral and let us know what happens. I had one in my red 66 and it worked like a champ.

Thanks again guys. The truck was sitting for a few years before i bought it. Since I've bought it I put a new carb and intake on it.
When pulling the old carb off I did not see a kickdown cable on it,
that might be part of my problem.I have been running the truck
in the second position thanks for the input though I was starting
to wonder if I should run it in the first position now I know.Ill take
it and have it flushed tommorrow and see if that helps.hopefully
I can find a kickdown and the parts I need for that problem. thanks again guys.

fixn, All the kickdown rod does is cause the tranny to shift backwards into second when passing or under heavy excelleration. You should be able to use the truck fine on the upshift mode.

The tranny could have more problems than we are able to diagnose here.

It will run fine without the kickdown rod ( not cable). You just won't have a passing gear when you want it. You can do it manually. Just don't drop it down into low, you'll meet Mr. windshield!

After all that, LOKAR makes a nice cable re-fit for the missing kick down linkage. Many here also use their accelerator cable as well.
