engine stops suddenly
just had my 1977 supercab get burned up at the tranny shop,cried over that one. Was given 1982 F150 with a 302 eng. c6 tranny replacing the OD it came with.My question or my problem is while driving the engine suddenly stops. Driving around town or on the highway makes no difference,it just stops. It starts right back up and may not do again.But i have had it do so 3or4 times in a half hour worth of driving. Any clues ,guesses ?

It could be many things, I have had problems like that twice. The first time was about 5 years ago and I fixed it by replacing the duraspark II ignition module (the square box on the left inner fender). The 2nd time was just two weeks ago and it ended up being a bad ignition switch. You should probably start by checking for loose or frayed wires at the solenoid and coil. When my ignition switch went bad I also had problems like starter keeps turning when key is turned to run or off position. You can also try searching the threads for more info. Good luck.

It could be the starter solenoid. When the truck is running in park, try hitting the solenoid with the palm of your hand. If the motor quits, I would say that is what it is. I have an AMC Eagle which uses the Duraspark ignition too and had this exact problem. It would quit randomly when driving over a bump. I replaced coil, tried ignition box, and was then thinking ignition switch, but then happened to hit the solenoid and caused the fault. I changed it 6000 miles ago and have had no problems since.
I think what happens is the electromagnet inside that makes contact when the ignition is on gets weak and can't hold closed when it is impacted or is jounced from driving. Hope this helps.
