ok...stupid question, i know...but if i wanted to swap from a 4 spd to a 5 spd tranny, would i be able to hook up my curved 4 spd shifter shaft to the 5 spd tranny? like i said...i know...stupid question....but i don't like the "fat-to-thin" style of the newer shift shafts...i like the style of the shaft on my 4 spd...
What year and what vehicle? You already have a 4-speed? I am guessing you will need to do a little fabricating/welding if you want to graft the old stick on. Cut the new shifter about an inch from the base and weld in the old shifter rod.
84 f-150 4x4, 300-6, 4 spd...i keep catching myself reaching for that 5th gear, but kinda hard to find on a 4 spd....lol...plus, i've been told that i could possibly get better mileage out of a 5 spd...also...what would i lose if i put a 5 spd in?? would i lose my granny gear? and what about 2nd gear take-off? would that suffer on a 5 spd?
you wouldnt loose your granny gear if you put a zf in. those are quite expensive but well worth it. if you go w/ an m50d, you will lose your granny gear and strength. if you pull or have any kinda of power goin through the driveline, get a zf. and yes, you would have an od gear so your mpg would increase.
any f250 w/ the same bolt pattern of the motor you have. ie. there are 6 different zf's. diesils 2wd and 4wd, 460 2wd and 4wd small block 2wd 4wd. i think thats it. i was doin a 460 swap, so i bought a whole f250 w/a 460 and 4wd zf. but the tranny go for a out a g rebuilt. do research, i got my whole donor rig w/ a rebuilt 460 for 700 bucks. ao you might be able to get a whole parts truck for cheaper then you could find the 460
it was the only manuel offered in f250's and up fromabout 1987 until i think 98 or 99 when the 6 speeds where introduced. the easiest wait is to look under the truck and see if there is a plate bolted to each side of the tranny. its a rectangle plate that would be taken off to attach pto (power take off) accesories. the second way to tell would be the diaganal lines criss crossing each other just above the power take off places. but any truck f250 350 w/ a stick later then 86 will most likly be the zf 5 speed.
