Okay, I'm 90% sure that my Ranger (1992 5 spd. 2wd, 3.0L V6) is one of the models that comes with a door chime, and buzzes when you've left the headlights on or the key in the ignition. The problem is that mine isn't working, and I have no idea where to find the buzzer. The guy I bought it from did a really bad job installing a security system, and it's possible that he clipped a wire somewhere back there. Has anybody here fixed a buzzer before? The wiring diagrams in my Haynes manual are no help, but I know it's in there somewhere.
I've checked down around the fusebox and steering column trying to find it...no luck. Do you think I'll need to remove the instrument panel to get at it?
Anyone know where (or if this exists) on an '88 Ranger Custom (theres nothing 'custom' about it...) until now!
I had no ashtray lite or glove box lite..but I do now..
But on numerous occassions, I left my headlites on ...fortunately for short periods of time, 'coz I dont have a 'buzzer' warning.
Any ideas.....
I dont have a manual...the previous owner couldnt find it.
This has been 2 years of annoyance....
TIA
It may be the same as my wifes Explorer. Under the ashtray right in front of the air ducts is a black box with a white connector, that should be it. Good Luck.

Yea.. I see that box.. wasnt sure what it is for, tho. Do those things crap out ..or is there some way to test it.
I got the seatbelt buzzer which works..and sounds like it comes from behind the glove box.
I'll check that black box you're talking about.. it is wired..so Im not sure what the prob may be.
TIA
Get a single pole, double throw relay where either of the throws is hot at all times. Connect the switched contact to the headlight circuit and the contact that is energized when the coil isn't energized to a 12v buzzer. Connect the coil to a switched power source that will turn off with the ignition. When the headlights are on and the ignition on, the switched contact is hot, but the relay coil pulls the contact to the unused output. Turn the ignition off, the switched contact falls to the output connected to the buzzer. When you turn the headlights off, the buzzer cuts off.
Ecellent.
Sounds do-able....I think. Its just a question of finding all that you mentioned.
If what is true about what 643NRK said earlier... That is surely the easier way to go.
I admire your electrical expertise....and thanks for your feedback. That would be my 'plan B' if all else fails...
Radio Shack still sells those parts. That's about the only thing they seem to carry anymore. Buy a little project box to stick everything into and you'll be good to go.
That was something I just thought about a week or so ago since mine isn't working either. I'm pretty sure I have the parts needed to do it sitting around the house somewhere. I might put one together when I have a few spare moments (which doesn't happen much lately) and let you know how it works.
I bought a 90 Ranger in 1994. The previous owner unplugged the chime box. It was a white or very light blue box up under the dash directly above the throttle, perhaps a few inches more toward the right. I couldn't find the location either, but poking around one day I found the plug off. After plugging it back in the chime worked.
I gotta say, between my wife and I, we left the lights on more than once. But since hooking up the box, we've never done it again.
Yes.. All that helps. I see the black box pretty easily accessable. I just havent had the time to unscrew it to see exactly what it is.
Id like to enable the 'system' if possible...coz Im tired of forgetting the lights..which isnt much of an issue at nite obviously..but during the nasty foggy days when the lites are on (no DRL's), lve forgotten to turn the lites of too often.
Thanks all... Ill work on it.
Sounds like you found the RABS module (Rear Antilock Brake System).
It takes axle speed info from a sensor mounted on top of your differential, and commands an electro-hydraulic valve mounted on the inside of your frame rail under the drivers seat. In an "axle not turning" (skid) situation, the valve will release pressure to the rear brakes. This module is usually mounted under the dash.
Well, I took that black box out and seperated it (2 clips) and found a computer chip along with a couple of 'transistors' or something of the like. Could that possibly control the headlight-On warning signal??
Seems odd, imo, but Im not sure!!
