hard starts

my 99 sd v-10 has recently had a hard time starting. In the morning I turn the key it starts for a second and dies. then in order to keep it running i must keep my foot on the gas. My garage fills with gas fumes from the exhaust. after it warms up its ok. whats the deal?

If it starts OK, but dies unless you hold the pedal down, the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve is probably malfunctioning. Seems to be a common problem with the V10. Some have reported sucess by just removing the valve and cleaning it. Others have replaced it.

AFter I posted this question, I went out to the garage and did that. I took the valve off and saw that it was carboned up. I sprayed carb clean and a little wd-40 and the plunger came free. put it back together and vroom!!! thanks for the info.

Mine was acting up too. Took it off and cleaned it. It worked for a few days. Now it takes 2-3 tries to start only if it's cold. I went and bought a new one and gasket. $70 for the valve and $4 for the gasket. Some day I'll get around to installing it. Not much fun!
