Do I have a Zero Degree Chainset?

How can I tell if I have a zero degree cam sprocket(s)? I was told by the engine builder that it is a straight up set, but the engine wants about 18 degrees BTDC timing. In talking to people from Crane, Comp Cams, MSD, etc, they think it might be that I have the later 8 degree retarded set. Is there any way I can tell? I sure would like to make a test without having to remove the timing cover. Is there any way I can test with a dial indicator on a valve and look at a degree wheel, etc.

Thank you.

The crank sprocket is the one to look at if it is straight up the dot will line up with the keyway. If you used an after market sprocket they some times have multiple keyways 4 degrees advanced straight up and 4 degrees retarded. make sure you got it on the right way. You can search the forum on this subject it comes up a lot. Some where in the 70's ford used the retarded timing sets. then when the put fuel injection on they went back to straight up.

You can verify a zero degree set with a dial indicator and degree wheel if you have your cam card. First locate TDC on the degree wheel then find where max No.1 intake lift occurs. The cam card centerline spec should coincide with the No.1 cylinder intake max lift point. If it is 8 deg. off, you do not have a TDC set. I am in the same process of changing mine over right now but I found my receipt of the timing set and researched a little to find out the bad news (or good news depending on how you look at it!).
