I have a 91 F250 4x4 with the 7.3 Diesal. It have about 250,000 miles one it. Whenever I pull my boat it runs quite hot. And when I start going uphill, it overheats. I have a new radiator, water pump (I had the pump replaced twice just to make sure), and thermostats, but it still overheats under these conditions. I used to be able to go anywhere pulling anything with the air conditioner blasting. No way now! I have had it to a diesel specialist and the ford dealer, but nobody can figure it out. They can't get it to overheat. But they didn't hook a boat up to it and go up the canyon either. I don't know where else to turn. Can anyone help me out on this? Could the engine just be worn out? How many miles can I expect to get out of this engine?
Thanks for your help.
I dont no my truck is doing the same thing
I think its my thermostst even tho thgis is the 3rd one i was told to put in a thermsost from ford so iam going to try that as soon as it warms up. she dont overheat when its 20 below out so why bother fixen it now in the cold.
What tranny do you have. If your tranny is starting to slip a little(auto) it can transfer alot of heat to the engine as well as make it work harder. Also check out your A/C condenser, might not be getting any air through it and then through the radiator. I ahd that problem with my 94. Had to use a pick and straighten all the fins that were smashed down.
The ip has a screw behind a cover on the side of the pump. That screw is used to increase the fuel supply. As a rule if its turned up you will be seeing a lot of black smoke when your comin on to her.BTW when the new t-stat was installed was it a ford or IH one. These engines are picky on that.Always use the correct ford or international t-stat, no aftermarkets.
My 5spd does the same thing anytime I really put it to work.
I cut the soup bowl out on Saturday and i've noticed a lot less smoke. I'm hoping the reman IP that I had dumb and dumber install just had it turned up and the increased airflow will help.
Does anyone know what the scale on the temp gauge is. mine is usually runninging in the "o" of normal and when I'm working it and it gets near the "M" I back off and let it cool down. I'd like to know if thats the diffrence between 180 and 185 or 180 and 220.
