........I've got water in my power steering system---what's an effective way to cleanse the system,or is it toast???
so far I've drained /run/replaced the fluid 2-3 times-but of course, all moisture contamination is not eliminated with each of these ,but certainly reduced.--Shall I just continue this process,or is there a better way??
It's pretty rare to get water in the system, but there was an electric fire in the engine area(bought it for salvage)--the reservoir cap melted, and firehose water contaminated system.
............is there a better way to drain than by disconnecting the recirc pipe??,,,,a better way to flush than refill /run/flush sequences??-anything I can use to expel water??...thanks!!
I know brake fluid will absorb water and other contaminates, same with atf though. I would think that p/s fluid would too, but i would say to keep flushing it, and as beartracks said, make sure to turn the wheels from side to side while doing this.
keep in mind power steering fluid is basically just hydraulic oil...nothing really special about it like brake fluid. i would flush it a few more times and see what happens
......budweiser!?!up here in the northwest,we drink REAL beer only!!!!!!!
...is there a problem that I am using transmission fluid??
----------is the steering system robust enough to handle the abuse it's gotten??--water contamination??--trans fluid??--I did~1/2 hour driving ,and it seems to feel like manual steering when I'm maneuvering to park.....doesn't make 'steering whine, though.
..........for the abuse it's gotten,is there any components that probably aren't robust enough to handle it??
One very helpful partsman was wondering if there's a checkvalve that might need replacement???
Adding a steering filter sounds like it would be helpful in the cleansing that still is needed, though I'm wondering if it'll trap water itself,or just grits,etc??..
Are steering filters commonly available?-or better to source on the net???....tanks a lot!!......michael.
