I've been a Dodge truck owner for over 8 years now, and presently have a '96 2500 regular cab with the gas V10. The truck has served me well, but I am about to upgrade for 2 reasons. First, the mileage is 9-10 mpg unladen. Also, I need a crew cab for my wife & kids.
So I am in the market for a diesel, either the Dodge or the Ford. I am not a "brand loyalty" guy, so I could go either way. I am leaning toward the Ford for a couple of reasons. I like the looks of the truck a lot more than the new Dodge. I also want the larger cab of the Ford. To top it off, I don't like how quiet the new Cummins is; it doesn't even sound like a diesel. In truth, the only qualm I have about the Ford are the bad things I've heard about the 6L Powerstroke engine. It hasn't been around nearly as long as the 7.3L version.
I thought I would have time to do some more research on this, but now I have an opportunity to buy an '01 6L PSD with low mileage and all the options I could ever want. I know the seller, and he reports no problems with it in 12K miles. He seems to be very knowledgeable about the diesels and knows about the problems that have been reported. To top it off, he would probably take $34K for the truck - it's a crew cab, long bed, 4x4 Lariat with a shell and spray-in bedliner.
So, would I be foolish to buy an '01, given the teething troubles with the 6L? Should I wait another few months and buy an '04 or even an '05 - that'll cost a lot more than this used one? Would you expect that this truck would have shown problems by now if there was anything to worry about?

Dealers around here are taking $10K off new SDs. I'm pretty sure that I could find a new '04 with all the equipment on it you will ever need or want and not spend more than $34k-$35k.
