It does indeed sound like it's malfunctioning. It could be the EGR valve itself or one of the sensors that controll it. The EGR system on our trucks can make them buck, stumble and miss even when they do work right.
You may just want to block it off at the manifold and see if it cures your problem. You can just loosen the bolts between the EGR valve and the intake manifold and slide in a piece of sheetmetal to block the hole and tighten up the bolts. It will problably cure your drivablility problem...... however it will set off your "check engine light" for insufficient EGR flow...... but thats not a big deal. Your not a real FORD enthousiast untill that light is on anyhow.

Aah, found the thread I was looking for. Question.. after blocking off the EGR (or unplugging and capping the vacuum line) will the engine run rich/lean? Will it matter to the O2 sensor?

Thanks !

No, it won't make any difference on how the engine runs reguarding rich or lean condition. The O2 sensor "might" richen it up to compensate for more oxygen.......... but not enough to affect your mileage.

Disconnecting the vacume line that runs to the EGR valve is certainly the easiest way to bypass it. Just make sure that the valve isn't leaking or faulty to begin with. If it is leaking then just unplugging the vacume line won't work.

where exactly is the EGR valve located? is this the round, approx. 1" thick piece that is hooked to a flat "plate" of sorts that a metal hose goes to from the exhaust manifold, towards the front of the engine from below the carbeurator?

Pat,
Thanks. I went for a long drive last night, changed my mpg right back up to 21 hwy where it should be. It was running pretty bad (hesitating) at 15 hwy. I still feel a slight vibration at higher speeds, time to check my timing I think. Also, I think this weekend I'm reaming out the cat.

I don't think half of the lights on my truck work, anyway, so does that compensate for the check engine light not being on? Just wondering.

Montana,
Mine's EFI so I don't know if you have an EGR valve, but it sounds like you're describing one.

As far as the lights, the one that I now have on stating to 'check engine', I'm with you, I "check my engine" quite often, especially when I check for top acceloration )

Yeah Montana, if your engine runs and the rest of your truck is sorta falling apart......... you can be in the club.

EGR valve is between intake manifold and the metal pipe that runs up from the exhaust manifold.

I think that pollution controlls are a good thing, I would never disconnect anything unless it is malfunctioning. I still have my cats and air pump. It's too bad that the EGR system is prone to failure long before any of the other componets.

I'll eventually be building a motor that has little or no emissions, and only the bare neccessity of vacume lines and electrical...i hate anything that makes my vehicle complicated (i.e. computers, emissions controls, wiring, etc.)

i finally went and picked up the spare motor i bought from a buddy, and i'm thinking that i may just use it as my builder-motor, and run the one i have in my truck currently, until my builder is finished...
