well i have a 84 f150 with a 4 speed stick. i put bigger tires on it and have a little problem. at 25mph im in second gear and the rpms are high. if i shift to third its too low. my question is, if i change the gears in my rear end will that solve my situation or do i have to change the transmission gears? either way let me know what type of gears to go with. thanks
A rear end gear change can get you back to what your performance and rpms were before you did the tire change. You do not need to do anything to your transmission gears. You need to know what your current gear ratio is, what the stock tire diameter was, and what your current tire diameter is. Here is the formula to help you figure out what gear ratio to change to:
NEW TIRE DIA./OLD TIRE DIA. X OLD GEAR RATIO = NEW GEAR RATIO.
Example: 33" / 29" X 3.23 = 3.68
In this example, the nearest available gear ratio would be 3.73
If you go to a local shop that specializes in differential gear work, expect to pay about $600 to $700 per axle for the gear change for parts and labor.
